Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
At Church of the Lamb, we long for our children to encounter God, grow in affection for him, and experience his abundant life.
These desires are carried out in four primary ways:
Creating an intergenerational community
Practicing liturgical rhythms
Baptizing and serving Eucharist to children
Experiencing the unique presence of the Holy Spirit in Children through our children’s ministry approach, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS).
We currently have different meetings for our three levels of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and our youth gathering.
Our youth meet on Sunday afternoons on the church property after our service, while CGS meets at a partner church on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.
If you’d like your child to be involved or if you have questions, email Renee@churchofthelamb.org. If you’d like to learn more about the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd methodology, click here.
The three elements of
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at Church of the Lamb:
Your children are the reason why we are here. They have a unique relationship with God and engage Him and the world He created in a special way. We are here to guide and cultivate that relationship in a place where they can grow through tangible but indirect means.
The Participants
The Space
The name of our space is called an atrium. The term comes from church architecture which is historically an open space in front of a church set aside for learning about Christianity. In our context, this space is used for children to practice encountering everything they would see, hear, feel, and smell in a church service so that they can participate on another level on a typical Sunday morning. Ultimately, the atrium is a place for children to foster their relationship with the Good Shepherd through these activities cultivated for them with items their size.
The adults that participate are known as “catechists,” or those who help train and teach those who seek the Lord in the atrium. Catechists have gone through training to learn how to best serve the children. The unique skill set that these adults have is to give the right amount of depth to the lesson or “presentation” they are working with.
When teaching, we as adults can often find ourselves wanting to make deeper connections to other scriptures and attributes of God. We’re tempted to explain the big picture or share the whole story. Trained catechists, however, learn to quiet those thoughts and allow the children to arrive to deeper knowledge of God on their own and in their own time.

Adult Participation
in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
“Catechist formation in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is both instructive as well as experiential. It captivates both the head as well as the heart. It has a holistic approach for the adult, enriching the adult in a background of scripture and liturgy, theology and prayer, as well as the pedagogy of the young child, helping the adult to see what face of God the young child most needs in order to enter into a relationship with God.”
As we partner in the spiritual care of our own children and the children in our community, we get to not only share the ways of Jesus through the Word and the Holy Spirit but also experience the love of God in the sanctity of the Atrium, in the liturgy of worship, and in our larger communities.
While Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is the educational modality we use to train up our children at Lamb, it also forms and shapes the spiritual practices and experience of the adults who interact with it.
Adults can collaborate in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd by incorporating CGS practices in the home, or by becoming an adult catechist.
Email renee@churchofthelamb.org to learn how you can invite CGS into your home throughout the week.

Almighty God, heavenly Father, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children: Give us calm strength and patient wisdom so to train them, that they may love all that is true, and pure, and lovely, and of good report, following the example of their Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
